Summary:

Want to learn how to fast forward (at different speeds), slow, and control YouTube videos? A quick set of shortcuts.

Details:

Here is how to Fast Forward and otherwise control your YouTube videos:

  • Fast forward – hit the right arrow once (5 second jump, repeat if necessary)
  • Faster forward – to jump ahead 10 seconds, hit the L key
  • Fastest forward – hold the right arrow button down
  • Go to the 10% mark – hit the 1 key. Go to the 20 mark by hitting the 2 key
  • Pause/play – the space bar, which is a toggle key (to stop then start)
    • Alternatively, click on video
  • Make the whole video go 2 times as fast in speed up mode:
    • Click the “Settings” wheel, which is the 3rd item from the right in the lower right
      • Change speed from normal to 2x or whatever other option you want

You can probably figure out the rest, but for completeness, I have put a bunch of it here.

Here is how to Rewind your YouTube videos:

  • Rewind – hit the left arrow once (5 second jump, repeat if necessary)
  • Faster rewind – hit the J key
  • Fastest rewind – hold the right arrow button down
  • Go to the 10% mark – hit the 1 key. Go to the 20 mark by hitting the 2 key
  • Pause/play – the space bar, which is a toggle key (to stop then start)
  • Make the whole video go 50% of the speed:
    • Click the “Settings” wheel, which is the 3rd item from the right in the lower right
      • Change speed from normal to 0.5 or whatever other option you want

Shouldn’t someone have taught you that earlier?

This article changed the way I use Youtube, especially the numbers being percents and the seconds fast forward time integrals exactly, I never noticed the difference between the right key and using L or J, Now I know one is 5 seconds or 10. So thanks for your time and insight to make this!

Numerous corrections & amplifications. These all pertain to desktop (Windows) usage.

– Very important: you have to have FOCUS on the VIDEO for these to work. E.g. click on the video to give it focus before you can hit J to rewind 10 seconds.
– 0 key to position to 0% of the way through a video (i.e. video start). 1 key for 10%. 2 key for 20%. 9 key for 90%. 3 through 8 keys are for 30% through 80%.
– 1 key for 10% is only the one atop keyboard, not the 1 on the numeric keypad.
All the other keys work when using either one.
– Home: go to start (same as 0). End: go to very end.
– Comma for back one frame. Period for forward one frame. Both require video to first be PAUSED.
– M toggle mute/unmute.
– Up and down arrows for volume.
– Shift to speed playback.
– K toggle pause/play (same as spacebar).
– F toggle maximize/restore (Firefox; not for Internet Explorer 11, at least).
– Shift-N to go to “next video” in youtube’s stack.
– C toggle captions on/off.
– / to position cursor at youtube search bar.

And my newest personal discovery, unseen anywhere else!
Numeric plus (+) key: hit repeatedly to go to super fast play mode (BETTER than shift->).
Numeric minus (-) key: hit repeatedly to go to slow motion mode (same as shift-<).
Hit "M" button twice to restore sound when or after using these.

The above post was victimized by a parser that misinterpreted my use of “less-than key” and “greater-than key”.

– Shift to speed playback
means
– Shift (less-than key) to slow playback. Shift (greater-than key) to speed playback.eans
